Fifth-Seeded Jeffs Finish Season with 60-48 NESCAC Semifinal Loss at Top-Seeded Bowdoin
FROM A BOWDOIN COLLEGE RELEASE
February 26, 2005
BRUNSWICK, ME - The fifth-seeded Amherst College women’s basketball team wrapped up its season with a 60-48 NESCAC Championship Tournament semifinal loss at top-seeded and third-ranked Bowdoin College on Saturday. The Jeffs finished 15-11, while the Polar Bears improved to 23-2 and will face second-seeded and top-ranked Bates College, who slipped by No. 3 seed Williams College 62-59 in Saturday’s other conference semifinal matchup, in the NESCAC Championship game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The Amherst defense held the host Polar Bears to just 36.4% (12-for-33) from the floor in the first half, taking the lead several times and forcing five ties, but Bowdoin junior Justine Pouravelis capped a 6-for-6 first-half shooting performance with a tip-in at the buzzer to carry a 25-21 lead into the break.
A pair of free throws from Amherst sophomore Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) pulled the Jeffs back within two to open the second half, but Bowdoin answered with an 8-0 run, led by senior Alison Smith, to give the Polar Bears their first double-digit lead of the game. Amherst would not go away, and with just under seven minutes to play junior Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) converted a three-point play and rookie point guard Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) nailed a pair from the charity stripe to pull the Jeffs within four. However, five straight Bowdoin points stretched the lead back to nine and the Polar Bears would never look back.
Pouravelis finished 10-for-11 from the field for a game-high 21 points and 12 boards, while sophomore Eileen Flaherty pitched in 15 points and nine rebounds for the Polar Bears.
Rookie forward Matia Kostakis (Andover, MA) paced the Jeffs with 14 points and nine caroms, while Morin and first-year Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) added 13 points apiece.
