Jeffs Snap Two-Game Skid with 58-54 Win at Middlebury

February 5, 2005

MIDDLEBURY, VT - Junior Julie Smith (Villanova, PA) tallied 10 points, eight rebounds and six blocks and snapped a 52-52 tie with a luyup with 1:17 left in regulation to lead the Amherst College women’s basketball team to a hard-fought 58-54 victory at NESCAC foe Middlebury College (10-11/3-4 NESCAC) on Saturday. The visiting Jeffs snapped a two-game losing skid, upping their record to 13-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Both teams held five-point leads in what turned out to be a back-and-forth opening half. Amherst held a slim advantage for most of the second half before a 7-0 Middlebury run tied the game at 52 with 1:32 left to play. After Smith gave Amherst the lead for good with her fourth bucket of the day, the Jeffs went on to hit all four of their free throw attempts over the final 13 seconds to seal the win.

Amherst rookies Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) and Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) joined Smith in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting NESCAC rival Bates College.
