Jeffs Suffer 78-65 Loss to Williams

February 4, 2005

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women’s basketball team fell to 12-8 overall and 3-3 in NESCAC play with a 78-65 loss to visiting Williams College (16-5/5-1 NESCAC) on Friday night. First-year Matia Kostakis (Andover, MA) paced the Jeffs in defeat with 19 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Maggie Miller (Wellesley, MA) led Williams with 20 points and seven boards.

Williams took an early 12-2 lead on a reverse layup by junior guard Colleen Hession (Northhampton, MA), but Amherst countered with a 9-0 spurt, capped by a three-point play by rookie Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL). Kostakis then added a layup off a nifty feed from sophomore Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) for a 19-18 Lord Jeff lead with 8:40 left in the half, but the Ephs answered with an 8-0 run of their own en route to a 10-point cushion at the break and never trailed again.

The second half brought more of the same as Williams opened with a 10-3 spurt, stretching the lead to 17. Amherst rallied and pulled within eight with 4:40 to play as Kostakis led the Jeffs on a 12-2 run, but the Ephs drained nine of 10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Muller and junior co-captain Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) added 12 points apiece for Amherst, while Reiff chipped in nine points and a team-high eight boards.

Joining Miller in double figures for Williams were Hession and sophomores Meghan Stetson (Oneonta, NY) and Meghan O’Malley (Topsfield, MA) with 17, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Stetson and O’Malley added seven caroms apiece, and senior Kerri McMahon posted six steals.

Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 p.m. at NESCAC rival Middlebury College.
