Jeffs Suffer 86-62 Loss at Williams

January 8, 2005

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Amherst College women’s basketball team suffered an 86-62 non-conference loss at Little Three archrival Williams College on Saturday afternoon. Williams sophomore forward Maggie Miller (Wellesley, MA) posted 23 points and 11 rebounds, and classmate Ellen Wilk (Guilford, CT) was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, including four three-pointers, for 21 points as the Ephs improved to 10-2, while Amherst fell to 7-3.

The Jeffs came out of the gates red hot, forcing three consecutive Eph turnovers and building a 7-0 lead on the strength of three straight buckets by rookie forward Matia Kostakis (Andover, MA). However, Williams came storming back with a 12-0 run of its own to secure a 17-12 advantage. Amherst sophomore Julie Smith (Villanova, PA) ended the run with a sweeping hook shot at the 11:51-mark, and after three minutes of scoreless play, rookie Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) chipped in two of her career-high 12 points to cut Williams’ lead to 17-16, but that was as close as the Jeffs would get. The Ephs closed the half with a 28-8 run to take a 45-24 advantage into the break.

Williams kept the pressure on in the second half, stretching its lead to 64-32 over the first 8:15. The Jeffs pulled back within 20, 75-55, with just under four minutes remaining, but the deficit proved too large and the Ephs cruised to their eighth consecutive victory over Amherst.

Kostakis matched Reiff with 12 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to lead Amherst. Williams junior Colleen Hession (Northampton, MA) joined Miller and Wilk in double figures with 11 points and seven assists, while sophomore Meghan Stetson (Oneonta, NY) chipped in 10 points and classmate Meghan O’Malley (Topsfield, MA) tallied 12 boards.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. at non-conference foe Western New England College.
