Jeffs Topple Suffolk, 61-49

January 7, 2005

BOSTON, MA - The Amherst College women’s basketball team shot a scorching 56.3% (18-for-32) from the floor in the first half en route to a 61-49 win over non-conference host Suffolk University on Thursday night. Amherst rookie point guard Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) netted a game-high 17 points and pilfered a trio of steals as the Jeffs improved to 7-2.

Suffolk took a 1-0 lead on a free throw by sophomore guard Jenn Fogg. However, less than a minute later, a steal by Amherst junior co-captain Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) led to a Pollack three-pointer and the Jeffs would never trail again. They posted a 17-5 run over the final six minutes, including a last-second shot by first-year Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL), to take a 41-28 edge into the break.

The Jeffs stretched their lead to 17 in the first two minutes of the second half on another Pollack trifecta and used stifling defense to hold the host Rams to just 31.0% (9-for-29) shooting and prevent them from coming within single digits throughout the remainder of regulation. Amherst first-year forward Matia Kostakis (Andover, MA) tallied nine points, a game-high 11 boards and three steals, and junior forward Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) had eight points and six rebounds. Suffolk senior forward Allison Fox had 16 points for the Rams, who fell to 6-4 with the loss.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. with a non-conference matchup at Little Three archrival Williams College.
