18th-Ranked Jeffs Hold Off No. 11 Bowdoin, 10-9

April 23, 2005

AMHERST, MA - The 18th-ranked Amherst College menís lacrosse team held off a late rally from visiting 11th-ranked NESCAC foe Bowdoin College (8-4/5-2 NESCAC) to earn a narrow 10-9 victory on Saturday. Senior midfielder Andrew Syfu (Hobart, IN) netted what proved to be the game-winning score with 12:32 left in the fourth quarter as the Jeffs knocked off their second straight ranked opponent and improved to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Amherst drew first blood just 15 seconds into play as Syfu won the face-off and fed sophomore Chris Hofmann (New Canaan, CT) for the score. Bowdoin senior Phil Stern (Maplewood, NJ) answered, evening the count at the 12:17-mark and finding junior Ford Barker (Southborough, MA) 1:26 later. Hofmann quickly knotted the score with an unassisted tally, sparking a 6-0 Amherst run over the next 16 minutes. Junior Kevin Boova (Summit, NJ) and sophomore Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) dealt each other assists during the flurry as Cherney flipped a sweet back-door lob pass to Boova to give the Jeffs a 5-2 edge, and Boova returned the favor at the 9:28-mark of the second quarter to cap the rally. Bowdoin junior Ryan Hurd (Carlisle, MA) stopped the bleeding with just over a minute left in the frame, but the Jeffs carried a 7-3 advantage into halftime.

Amherst picked up right where it left off in the beginning the third quarter, netting back-to-back goals just 20 seconds apart to mount a 9-3 lead. Hofmann had a hand in both goals, scoring the first off a slick feed from Boova and finding senior Josh Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) from behind the net for the second. However, the Polar Bears came clawing back with a 5-0 spurt of their own, cutting the lead to 9-8 with 13:21 remaining in regulation. Junior Andy Nelson (Marston Mills, MA) keyed the run with a trio of scores, including a man-up goal to close the third session. Syfu slammed the door on Bowdoinís comeback hopes, shaking a defender and sending home the game-winner with 12:32 left to play. The Amherst defense solidified down the stretch and, despite surrendering a score in the final minute, held on for the win.

Hofmann finished with three goals and an assist, while Syfu and Derek Cherney added two goals and an assist apiece. Boova chipped in a goal and two assists, Josh Cherney and junior Sean Murray (Fort Lauderdale, FL) each found the net and senior Alex Casertano (Millbrook, NY) dished out an assist. Junior Andrew Wilcox (Ancramdale, NY) scooped up a game-high nine ground balls and made several key defensive takeaways. Senior defensemen Greg Donohue (Bow, NH) and Scott Aldrich (Wilmington, MA) nabbed four and three ground balls, respectively, while senior goalie Cushing Donelan (Noroton, CT) grabbed 10 saves and four ground balls.

Nelson paced Bowdoin with three goals, while Barker added a pair of scores and Stern had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Charlie Legg (Baltimore, MD) collected seven saves in goal.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting NESCAC opponent Connecticut College.
