18th-Ranked Jeffs Upend No. 20 Bates, 11-9

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Amherst College senior attacker Alex Casertano (Millbrook, NY) notched five goals to lead the 18th-ranked Jeffs to an 11-9 menís lacrosse victory over 20th-ranked NESCAC rival Bates College at Harvard University on Wednesday. Amherst improved to 7-3 (3-3 NESCAC), while Bates dropped to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Bates led early, building a 3-1 first-quarter advantage on goals by junior David Pritchard, sophomore Wes Couture and first-year Brent Morin. However, Amherst battled back, knotting the count at 4-4 at halftime. The Jeffs exploded out of the break, tallying six third-quarter goals and adding a seventh in the final frame to secure the victory. Casertano netted three of his game-high five scores in the flurry.

Sophomore Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) chipped in three goals and two assists for Amherst, while senior Josh Cherney (Chappaqua, NY), junior Kevin Boova (Summit, NJ) and sophomore Chris Hofmann (New Canaan, CT) each tallied one score and senior tri-captain Colby Griffith (Lexington, MA) added a trio of assists.

Nine different players found the net for Bates, led by senior Dan Ross, who notched a goal and an assist.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. against visiting 11th-ranked NESCAC foe Bowdoin College.
