Amherst Women Fifth, Men Ninth at NESCAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

May 2, 2005

WATERVILLE, ME - Led by first-place finishes from senior All-America Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA), senior Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) and sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA), the Amherst womenís outdoor track and field team took fifth at the NESCAC Championships, held at Colby College on Saturday, while the men, paced by wins from senior All-Americas Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) and Mike Page (Fargo, ND), finished ninth. Williams College captured both the menís and womenís team titles.

Garrahan and Hamill capped a stellar week - they shattered school records in the 5,000-meter run and the 10,000-meter run, respectively, at the Penn Relays on Thursday - with victories in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run. Hamillís time of 17:00.02 in the 5K took down her own meet record, set in 2004, while Garrahanís mark of 10:44.42 in the steeplechase fractured the meet record by over 14 seconds. Henry won the long jump and placed third in the triple jump, while junior Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA) finished third in the 10,000-meter run. Junior Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) and sophomore Maria Millard (Orono, ME) grabbed sixth-place finishes in the javelin and the 400-meter hurdles, respectively, while junior All-America Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) posted a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter run. Senior Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) and sophomore Keyonte Sutherland (Brooklyn, NY) placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 200-meter dash, respectively. Junior Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN), Henry, Morin and Sutherland teamed to take third in the 4x400-meter relay and fifth in the 4x100-meter relay, while first-year Meg Ray (Menands, NY), Garrahan, Hamill and Polich placed sixth in the 4x800-meter relay.

On the menís side, Morgan captured his second straight NESCAC title in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.15, edging out his nearest competitor by less than half a second, while Page took first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:18.29. First-year Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) posted his second freshman school record of the outdoor season with a third-place, 31:53.14 finish in the 10,000-meter run, while senior Matt Katz (Tallahassee, FL) grabbed seventh in the 5,000-meter run. First-year Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT), sophomore All-America Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL), Morgan and Page teamed to capture first place in the distance medley relay.

Both teams return to action this weekend at the Division III New England Championships. The men will compete at Springfield College, while the women travel to Bates.
