Amherst's Hamill, Garrahan Smash School Records at Penn Relays

April 29, 2005

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Amherst College senior All-America Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) blasted her way to a second-place finish in the Olympic development section of the 10,000-meter run at the prestigious Penn Relays on Thursday, while sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) flew to a second-place showing in the collegiate section of the 5,000-meter run.

With a time of 34:05.31, Hamill shattered her own school mark set as a sophomore at the Division III NCAA Championships (34:42.03) by nearly 37 seconds, while Garrahanís time of 16:31.43 smashed Hamillís 5,000-meter Amherst record (16:45.06) by almost 15 seconds. Hamill was the top collegiate finisher in the 10K, and had the collegiate and Olympic development sections been combined, Garrahanís mark would have secured fourth place overall.

Hamill, a four-time NCAA champion, has earned 16 All-America certificates in cross country and track over her four-year career and holds five school records. Garrahan, a six-time All-America, has already set 11 school records in just three-and-a-half track seasons. Hamill and Garrahan were also members of the distance medley relay squad that notched a school record with a second-place finish at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Amherstís menís and womenís track and field squads return to action tomorrow (Saturday) at the NESCAC Championships, hosted by Colby College.
