Hamill, Garrahan Lead Amherst Women to Best-Ever Third-Place Showing at NCAA Indoor Track Championships

March 13, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, IL - Senior Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) claimed victory in the 5,000-meter run for the third time in her collegiate career, while sophomore Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) placed second in the mile, as the Amherst women’s track and field team posted a best-ever third-place showing at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track Championships, hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University over the weekend.

With a time of 17:02.40, which bested runner-up Caroline Cretti of Williams College by more than 12 seconds, Hamill won the 5,000 for the second straight year (she also won as a rookie in 2002). Garrahan, meanwhile, bettered previous meet and facility records with her time of 4:54 in the mile, second only to Wartburg senior Missy Buttry’s scorching time of 4:43.92, which was the best in Division III this season.

Hamill and Garrahan also teamed with sophomore Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) and junior Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) for a second-place finish in the distance medley relay. Their time of 11:55.49 topped the previous facility record. Wartburg won the event in 11.41.66, which shattered a meet record and was the best time in Division III this season.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh tallied 36 points to claim its second straight and fifth overall women’s team title, followed by Wartburg with 32 points and Amherst with 26.

On the men’s side, an Amherst contingent of sophomores John Babbott (Ojai, CA) and Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and seniors Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) and Mike Page (Fargo, ND) nearly brought home a national title in the distance medley relay with a third-place time of 10:08.54. Nebraska Wesleyan University won the event in 10:06.42.
