Hamill Named New England Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year at NCAA Division III Championships

March 11, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, IL - Amherst College senior Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) was named New England Athlete of the Year at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University this weekend.

A three-time national champion and fourteen-time All-America honoree, Hamill enters her 11th national championship meet as a favorite in the 5,000-meter run with a seeded time of 16:37.45. She won both the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs at the Division III New England Championships, topped the 5,000 at the Boston University Terrier Classic and guided Amherstís distance medley relay squad to victory and an NCAA qualifying time at the Boston University Valentine Classic this season.

Joining Hamill on the womenís side are sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and junior All-America Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI). Garrahan will compete in the mile, while Polich will toe the line in the 800-meter run. Hamill, Garrahan and Polich will team with sophomore Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) in an attempt to repeat last yearís All-America performance in the distance medley relay.

On the menís side, senior Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) will compete in the 800-meter run and join sophomores John Babbott (Ojai, CA) and Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and senior All-America Mike Page (Fargo, ND) in the distance medley relay. Morgan and Page, competing in their second straight national meet, look to lead the distance medley relay squad to its second All-America finish in as many years.
