Amherst Women 10th, Men 29th at Open New England Indoor Track Championships

BOSTON, MA - Sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahanís (Fairfax Station, VA) first-place finish in the mile and junior All-America Ginger Polichís (Ironwood, MI) fifth-place showing in the 800-meter run paced the Amherst College womenís indoor track and field team to a 10th-place finish, while the men, led by senior All-America Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV), took 29th at the Open New England Championships, held at Boston University over the weekend.

Garrahan tore through the mile in a school-record 4:49.98, qualifying automatically for the NCAA Championships, while Polich captured a school record and an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 800-meter run with a blazing time of 2:15.61. Senior Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA), juniors Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) and Lyndsey Scott (West Orange, NJ) and sophomore Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) added a third school record in the 4x400-meter dash (4:01.31), placing 13th, while Campbell and Henry took 20th and 23rd, respectively, in the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles. Senior All-America Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) placed fourth in the 3,000-meter run (9:37.71), while first-year Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) took 10th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:57.75.

In the menís meet, Morgan grabbed eighth place and qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships in the 800-meter run, speeding through the line in 1:53.23, while senior All-America Michael Page (Fargo, ND) took eighth in the 3,000-meter run (8:31.88). Sophomore John Babbott (Ojai, CA) grabbed 15th place in the 800-meter run (1:56.10), senior Matt Katz (Tallahassee, FL) took 19th in the mile (4:20.24), and sophomore Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and first-year Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT) joined Babbott and Morgan to capture sixth place (7:48.17) in the 4x800-meter relay.

Both teams return to action this Friday at the Trinity Last Chance Meet, held at Yale University.
