Jeffs Race Past Competition at St. Valentine Invitational, Tufts Stampede

BOSTON, MA & MEDFORD, MA - Senior All-America Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) and the womenís distance medley relay both qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships to lead the Amherst College menís and womenís indoor track and field teams at the St. Valentine Invitational, held at Boston University on Friday and Saturday. Seniors Matt Katz (Tallahassee, FL) and Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) and sophomore John Babbott (Ojai, CA) posted first-place finishes to lead the rest of the menís and womenís squads at the Tufts Stampede on Saturday.

Morgan placed 12th in the 800-meter run at Boston University, blazing to a 1:53.92 finish, while senior All-America Mike Page (Fargo, ND) took 34th in the 5,000-meter run, clocking in at 15:01.83. Senior Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA), junior Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) and sophomores Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and Lyndsey Scott (West Orange, NJ) raced to an 11:53.03 in the distance medley relay. Garrahan dipped under five minutes in the mile (4:57.41), narrowly missing her own school record, while Hamill followed just under five seconds later.

At Tufts, Babbott grabbed first place in the one-mile run (4:22.13) and Katz took first in the 3,000-meter run (8:50.44), while first-year Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT) and sophomore Cooper Knowlton (Montclair, NJ) posted third-place finishes in the 600- and 5,000-meter run, respectively. First-year Mike Harbus (New York, NY) placed fourth in the 3,000-meter run, classmate Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) took fifth in the one-mile run and junior Evan Guiney (Cooperstown, NY) finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run, while Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and Richard Wilson (Columbus, OH) each placed eighth in the 800-meter run and one-mile run, respectively.

Henry paced the women with first-, third- and seventh-place finishes in the 55 meter hurdles, the long jump, and the 200-meter dash, respectively, while first-year Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) nabbed first-place in the 5,000-meter run and sophomore Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) took third in the 55-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash. Senior Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) posted a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run, first-year Laura Mortimer (Jackson, MS) grabbed third in the one-mile run and junior Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) placed sixth in the 400-meter dash.

Both teams return to action this weekend at the Division III New England Indoor Championships. The menís meet will be held at Tufts, while the women compete at Smith College.
