Jeffs Shine at Terrier Classic, Wesleyan Invitational

BOSTON, MA & MIDDLETOWN, CT - Amherst College senior Carter Hamill and sophomore Shauneen Garrahan posted outstanding performances at the Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University on Friday, while junior Ginger Polich and sophomore John Babbott led the menís and womenís indoor track and field teams at the Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday.

Hamill tied for fourth in the 5,000 and earned automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships with a time of 16:34.95, and was the top Division III finisher in a field comprised mostly of Division I and professional opponents. Garrahan ran the 3,000 in 9:46.70 and also posted the top Division III time, crossing the line 11th.

Polich paced the women at Wesleyan, nabbing first-place finishes in the 1,000 and 1,500. She topped the field by more than six seconds in both races, finishing in 3:05.03 and 4:53.79, respectively. Also earning an individual win was first-year Heather Wilson, who bested the field in the 3,000. Fellow rookie Laura Mortimer and senior Ali Rodriguez followed Wilson in third and fourth, respectively. Senior co-captain Lee-Jay Henry grabbed third in the long jump and fifth in the 55-meter hurdles, while junior Lyndsey Scott earned second in the 400 and fifth in the high jump.

Babbott ran a 2:35.61 in the 1,000, nabbing the lone first-place finish for the men. Senior Matt Katz, first-year Mike Harbus and sophomore Nate Freese finished third, seventh and ninth, respectively, in the 3,000, while fellow senior Jack Morgan grabbed third as well in the 800. Also tallying a third-place finish was sophomore Sam Hayman, who led first-year Rom Cabeza in a 3-4 finish in the 600. Rookie Tomas Morrissey claimed fourth in the 1,500, while junior Evan Guiney earned fifth in the 5,000.

Both squads return to action Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Tufts Invitational.
