Amherst Trio Honored for Excellence in Academics, Athletics
July 19 - Recent Amherst graduates Ashley Harmeling and Carter Hamill were each named Second-Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), while rising junior Sarah Harper was tabbed an All-American Scholar by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA). Hamill, Garrahan Claim National Titles; Women Fifth at NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships
May 28 - Senior Carter Hamill won her fifth individual national championship with a time of 34:00.43 in the 10,000-meter run, and sophomore Shauneen Garrahan followed suit with a national title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as the Amherst women's track and field team finished fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Wartburg College on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Amherst Women Sixth, Men 28th at ECAC Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships
May 23 - The Amherst women’s outdoor track and field team posted a sixth-place finish at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships, hosted by Springfield College over the weekend, while the men’s squad finished 28th. Sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahan and first-year Heather Wilson captured individual championships for the women, and senior Jack Morgan earned a second-place finish for the men. Full Story
Amherst Women 10th, Men 20th at Open New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships
May 16 - Senior All-Americas Carter Hamill and Mike Page led the Amherst women’s and men’s outdoor track and field teams to respective 10th- and 20th-place finishes at the Open New England Championships, hosted by the University of New Hampshire over the weekend. Hamill grabbed the women’s 5,000-meter title with a time of 16:51.71, while Page posted a second-place showing in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, racing to a 9:09.50 finish. Full Story
Amherst Women Second, Men 15th at Division III New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships
May 9 - The Amherst women’s outdoor track and field team nabbed second-place at the Division III New England Championships, hosted by Bates College over the weekend, while the men, competing at Springfield College, posted a 15th-place finish. Senior All-Americas Carter Hamill and Mike Page led the way as Hamill won the women’s 5,000-meter run and Page topped the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Full Story

May 2 - Led by first-place finishes from senior All-America Carter Hamill, senior Lee-Jay Henry and sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahan, the Amherst women’s outdoor track and field team took fifth at the NESCAC Championships, held at Colby College on Saturday, while the men, paced by wins from senior All-Americas Jack Morgan and Mike Page, finished ninth. April 29 - Amherst senior All-America Carter Hamill blasted her way to a second-place finish in the Olympic development section of the 10,000-meter run at the prestigious Penn Relays on Thursday, while sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahan flew to a second-place showing in the collegiate section of the 5,000-meter run. April 25 - Paced by junior All-America Ginger Polich’s first-place showing in the 800-meter run and classmate Krissy Morin’s first-place performances in the high jump and javelin, the Amherst women’s outdoor track and field team placed second overall at the Little Three Championships, held at Amherst on Saturday, while the men, led by Tomas Morrissey’s first-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, placed third. April 20 - The Amherst men’s outdoor track and field team grabbed eight first-place finishes, while the women’s team claimed five victories in a mid-week home meet with Trinity College, Keene State College, UMass Lowell and Brandeis University on Tuesday. April 18 - Senior All-Americas Carter Hamill and Mike Page and sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahan all posted NCAA Championship qualifying times to lead the Amherst men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams at the George Davis Invitational, hosted by UMass Lowell on Saturday. Hamill posted an automatic qualifier in the women’s 5,000-meter run, while Page grabbed provisional qualification in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase and Garrahan raced to provisional times in the women’s 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs. February 14 - Senior All-America Jack Morgan and the women’s distance medley relay both qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships to lead the Amherst men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams at the St. Valentine Invitational, held at Boston University on Friday and Saturday. January 24 - The Amherst women’s indoor track team earned 58 points and a fifth-place finish at the Tufts Invitational on Saturday, while the men compiled 55 points and took sixth. Whiting Named 18th-Annual Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete of the Year
January 12 - Former Amherst football, baseball and indoor track standout Paul Whiting was named the NCAA Division III male recipient of the 18th-Annual Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, as announced by the University & Northwest Sertoma Club of Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday. The award recognizes one male and one female student-athlete from NCAA Divisions I, II and III for excellence in academics, athletics and community service. Whiting is the first-ever recipient from Amherst College. Full Story
Jeffs Open Indoor Track Slate at Northeastern Husky Carnival
December 6 - Amherst senior Carter Hamill opened the indoor track and field season with a blazing time of 16:58.54 in the 5k - an automatic qualifying time for the women’s NCAA Championship meet - at Northeastern’s Husky Winter Carnival, held at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday. Sophomore Jon Ettinger led the Amherst men with an 18th-place showing in the 500-meter dash. Full Story
Track Teams Set for 2004-05 Seasons
December 2 - The Amherst women's track and field team, led by three-time national champion, 14-time All-America and senior co-captain Carter Hamill and five-time All-America sophomore Shauneen Garrahan, sets its sights on returning to the NCAA Championships, while the men, highlighted by senior All-Americans and co-captains Daivd Molina and Jack Morgan, will be a force this season.
