Jeffs Blanked 5-0 at Top-Ranked Middlebury

FROM A MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE RELEASE

December 11, 2004

MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Amherst College men’s hockey team saw its four-game unbeaten streak fall by the wayside with a 5-0 non-league loss at defending national champion Middlebury College - the nation’s top-ranked team - on Saturday night. The host Panthers remain undefeated at 4-0, while Amherst drops to 4-2-2.

Amherst nearly drew first blood when junior forward Jack Greeley’s (Scituate, MA) breakaway shot grazed but failed to completely cross the goal line. Middlebury took a 1-0 lead at 6:26 of the opening period when Mickey Gilchrist made a nice transition feed to Jocko DeCarolis for the game’s first goal. Shady Young made it a 2-0 game at 10:48 when he intercepted a pass and skated in all alone before beating Amherst sophomore netminder Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA). The lead moved to 3-0 at 16:45 as Eric LaFreniere tipped in a crossing pass from Gilchrist on a two-on-one break.

The score would remain 3-0 until the game’s final 1:15, when Levi Doria and DeCarolis tallied back-to-back goals 35 seconds apart to seal the win. Yen-I Chen made 22 saves in goal for Middlebury, while Fillman made 36 stops for the Jeffs.

Amherst returns to action Friday, January 7 at 7:45 p.m. at NESCAC rival Trinity College.
