Schoppel Named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week

December 6, 2004

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College first-year forward Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, Ontario/Jacob Hespeler) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Men’s Hockey Co-Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Jeffs (3-1-2) to a 4-1 win over previously unbeaten St. Michael’s College and a 5-5 tie against second-ranked Norwich University.

Schoppel netted a pair of goals and dished out an assist in Friday night’s win over St. Michael’s and rebounded with back-to-back tallies to give Amherst an early 3-2 lead in Saturday’s tie with visiting Norwich, upping his season totals to nine points on seven goals and two assists.

“Kyle’s a very smart player,” says Amherst head coach Jack Arena ’83. “He’s always in the right place, and he knows how to finish when presented with an opportunity. We expected him to be a good player, but right now he’s producing even more than we’d hoped, and he’s a great kid.”

Schoppel leads all NESCAC first-years in both points and goals and stands third in the conference and sixth in the nation in goals per game (1.17).

Amherst returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting non-league foe Western New England College.
