Jeffs Win Home Opener, Deal St. Michael's First Loss, 4-1

December 3, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College menís hockey team won its home opener on Friday night, dealing ECAC East foe St. Michaelís College its first loss of the season, 4-1. Amherst rookie forward Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, Ontario) posted a pair of goals and an assist, while senior co-captain Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) had a goal and two assists and fellow co-captain Jon Hill (Averill Park, NY) dished out a trio of assists. The Jeffs improved to 3-1-1 overall and remained undefeated in conference play at 2-0-1, while the Purple Knights fell to 3-1 (3-1 ECAC East).

Kretzman put the Jeffs on the board 5:10 into the first period, taking a feed from Schoppel on the right side and flipping the puck over the top of St. Michaelís sophomore goalie Erik Smith (Warwick, RI). Amherst sophomore defenseman Trevor Calamel (Lockport, NY) pushed the lead to 2-0 with 5:44 left in the opening frame as he took a pass from Hill on the left side and sent his own rebound top shelf for the power-play score, his first of the season.

The score remained 2-0 until the 14:37-mark of the second session when Schoppel snagged a long pass from Hill up the left side and beat both his defender and Smith for the goal. Schoppel found the net again with just under two minutes left in the period as Kretzman led a short-handed breakaway and fed Schoppel for his fifth score of the season.

St. Michaelís junior forward Alex Watts (Cheshire, CT) prevented the shutout 4:24 into the final frame as he took a breakaway pass from classmate Nick Dancey (Anaheim, CA) and beat Amherst sophomore goalie Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) one-on-one for the score.

The Amherst defense, led by Hill, Calamel, senior Bill Jenkins (Edina, MN), sophomore Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) and first-years Rob Stevenson (Newton, MA) and Michael McIntosh (Soldotna, AK), was extremely physical all night and killed all five St. Michaelís power-play opportunities. Fillman anchored the back of the defense, collecting 23 saves, while Smith finished with 27.

Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 p.m. against visiting second-ranked ECAC East foe Norwich University.
