Jeffs Top Bowdoin 4-2 in Regular-Season Finale

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College menís hockey team finished its regular season 13-9-2 overall and 11-6-2 in conference play, topping visiting Bowdoin College 4-2 on Saturday. Amherst sophomore goalie Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) grabbed 23 saves in his second straight win as the Jeffs secured the No. 5 seed in the NESCAC Championship Tournament, while Bowdoin, which earned the fourth-seed in the conference tournament, closes its regular season 15-5-3 overall and 11-5-3 in conference play.

The Jeffs dominated play from the start, building a 3-0 lead over the first two periods. Senior defenseman Bill Jenkins (Edina, MN) gave Amherst a 1-0 edge with 1:41 left in the first, ripping a slap shot from the point for a power-play score, and rookie forward Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, Ontario) stretched the lead to two with a shorthanded tally at the 6:44-mark of the second. Sophomore defenseman Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) notched his second goal in as many days, going around Bowdoin junior goalie George Papachristopoulos (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec) and stuffing it home with a backhanded shot off a 3-on-2 feed from junior forward Steve Nelson (Wayzata, MN). The Jeffs took a 4-0 lead 6:26 into the final frame as senior forward Roy Mabrey (Needham, MA) tacked on another power-play goal, flipping in a rebound from junior forward Jack Greeley (Scituate, MA).

Bowdoin finally got on the board with just over 12 minutes left in regulation as junior Adam Dann (Burlington, VT) fired a wrist shot high right side, and the Polar Bears tallied another goal in the final seconds senior Nate Riddell (Nanaimo, British Columbia) launched a shot from behind his own blue line and slipped it past an already celebrating Fillman.

Papachristopoulos finished with 27 saves, while senior Dave Sandals (Wallingford, CT) nabbed six in defeat.

Amherst travels to Bowdoin for a rematch in the NESCAC Championship Tournament quarterfinals next Saturday.
