Jeffs Clip Conn. College, 4-1

February 12, 2005

NEW LONDON, CT - The Amherst College menís hockey team posted a 4-1 victory at NESCAC host Connecticut College on Saturday. Junior Steve Nelson (Wayzata, MN) tallied a pair of goals as the Jeffs snapped a four-game skid and improved to 11-9-2 overall and 9-6-2 in conference play.

Nelson put the Jeffs on the board 9:10 into play, netting a power-play goal off assists from senior Bill Jenkins (Edina, MN) and junior Jack Greeley (Scituate, MA). First-year Michael McIntosh (Soldotna, AK) stretched the lead to 2-0 in the final minute of the opening frame, lighting the lamp off a feed from sophomore Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO). Conn. College senior Dave Moccia (Malvern, PA) netted the lone goal of the second session to pull the Camels within one, but Nelson and senior co-captain Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) tacked on third-period scores to put the game out of reach.

Seniors Marc Russell (Essex, VT) and Scott Aldrich (Wilmington, MA), sophomore Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) and first-year Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, Ontario) were all credited with assists for the Jeffs, while sophomore goalie Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) collected 37 saves. Senior Steve Oven (Vestal, NY) posted 34 saves for Conn., which dropped to 6-15-1 overall and 4-12-1 in conference play.

The Jeffs, ranked fifth in the current NESCAC standings, conclude their regular-season slate next weekend as they face visiting Colby College on Friday at 7 p.m. and ninth-ranked Bowdoin College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
