Jeffs Suffer 4-3 Loss at Tufts

February 11, 2005

MEDFORD, MA - Tufts University junior Ken Cleary scored with just 1:12 left in the third period to deal the visiting Amherst College men’s hockey team a 4-3 loss on Friday night. Senior Roy Mabrey (Needham, MA) posted a goal and an assist for Amherst (10-9-2/8-6-2), while Tufts improved to 10-10-1 overall and 6-9-1 in conference play.

Mabrey netted his power-play tally 12:14 into the opening period, but the hosts responded with goals from first-years Joe Cappellano and Greg O’Connell to carry a 2-1 edge into the first intermission. Tufts extended its lead to 3-1 on senior Jason Boudrow’s fifth goal of the year just under five minutes into the second. Amherst answered with another power-play score at the 13:45-mark of the second, when junior Steve Nelson (Wayzata, MN) connected off assists from Mabrey and junior Jack Greeley (Scituate, MA). Senior co-captain Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) evened the count 12:54 into the final frame, notching his 14th score of the year, but Cleary netted the game-winner in the waning minutes to spoil the Jeffs’ comeback.

Sophomore Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) posted 24 saves in goal for Amherst, while Tufts first-year James Kalec collected 27 saves.

Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Saturday) at 4 p.m. against NESCAC host Connecticut College.
