Jeffs Edged by No. 6 Middlebury, 3-2

February 4, 2005

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men’s hockey team fell to visiting sixth-ranked NESCAC rival Middlebury College 3-2 on Friday night. The Jeffs rallied with a pair of scores from rookie Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, Ontario) in the final two sessions but could not overcome three first-period Middlebury goals as they fell to 10-7-2 overall and 8-4-2 in conference play.

Middlebury senior Patrick Nugent (Lynnfield, MA) and first-years Jed McDonald (Hingham, MA) and Tom Maldonado (Bronx, NY) all found the net for the Panthers in the opening frame. Nugent netted a power-play score 4:52 into play, while McDonald lit the lamp just under three minutes later and Maldonado’s game-winning score came shorthanded at the 16:28-mark.

Schoppel put the Jeffs on the scoreboard 12:35 into the second period with a short-handed tally off feeds from senior co-captain Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) and sophomore Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO). Amherst pulled within one with 1:20 left in regulation as Schoppel gathered the puck behind the net and stuffed home a wrap-around. The Jeffs pulled sophomore goalie Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA), who finished with 33 saves, in the closing seconds, but couldn’t even the score.

Junior Yen-I Chen (Rigaud, Quebec) collected 28 saves for Middlebury as the Panthers improved to 14-3-2 overall and 10-3-1 in conference play

The Jeffs return to action tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 p.m. against visiting NESCAC archrival Williams College.
