Jeffs Upended at NEC, 5-3

FROM A NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE RELEASE

January 29, 2005

HENNIKER, NH - The Amherst College men’s hockey team suffered a 5-3 loss at ECAC East foe New England College (NEC) on Saturday. Amherst senior Brad Craigen (Kitchener, Ontario) and sophomore Erik Lund (Edina, MN) each posted a goal and an assist as the Jeffs fell to 10-6-2 overall and 8-3-2 in conference play.

Lund struck early, scoring just 2:13 into play off an assist from senior Thierry Pauyo (Montreal, Quebec), but NEC answered at the 6:27-mark as Rashuan Ewing found the net. Craigen regained the Jeffs’ one-goal edge with just under five minutes left in the opening frame, lighting the lamp off feeds from Lund and fellow sophomore Trevor Calamel (Lockport, NY). Junior Jack Greeley (Scituate, MA) pushed the Jeffs’ advantage to 3-1 off Calamel’s second assist 5:39 into the second period, but the Pilgrims rallied with four straight goals, including three in the final session to earn the comeback win.

Amherst sophomore Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) collected 39 saves, while Scott Gray posted 50 saves for NEC, which improved to 10-9 overall and 7-6 in conference play.

The Jeffs return to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting fifth-ranked NESCAC rival Middlebury College.
