Senior Roy Mabrey tallied a pair of goals on Saturday.

Jeffs Blank Skidmore, 3-0

January 22, 2005

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College first-year forward Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, Ontario) netted his second game-winning score in as many games and senior Roy Mabrey (Needham, MA) found the net twice as the Jeffs blanked visiting ECAC East foe Skidmore College 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Jeffs won their third straight, improving to 9-4-2 overall and 7-2-2 in conference play.

Schoppel’s game-winner came 5:39 into the opening frame as senior co-captain Jon Hill (Averill Park, NY) fed Schoppel on the breakaway and he smoked Skidmore junior goalie Mike Mansfield (Arlington, MA) for the short-handed score. Despite a 3-on-4 disadvantage, Mabrey netted a second short-handed tally, pushing the Amherst advantage to 2-0 with 2:20 left in the second session. Trying to rally a comeback, Skidmore pulled Mansfield twice in the waning minutes of the final period, but the Thoroughbreds coughed up the puck deep in their own zone and Mabrey found the open net for his second goal.

Amherst sophomore Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) needed just 17 saves to register his first collegiate shutout, while Mansfield posted 48 saves in a losing effort as Skidmore fell to 3-14 overall and 2-9 in conference play.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. against visiting non-conference opponent Hobart College.
