November 12, 2004

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College senior co-captain forward Andrew Schiel (Wayne, PA/Conestoga) was named Second-Team Preseason All-America by D3hoops.com on Friday. He was an Honorable Mention D3hoops.com All-America selection last season after leading Amherst to a school-record 27 wins and its first-ever trip to the NCAA Final Four.

Schiel earned Second-Team All-NESCAC and Second-Team D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region honors as well as a junior when he topped the conference with 54 blocks and paced the Jeffs in scoring at 13.5 points per game. He earned NESCAC Player of the Week plaudits after averaging 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 blocks and shooting a blistering 9-for-15 from three-point range in a trio of early-season wins at Clark, Western New England and Springfield.

As a sophomore, Schiel finished seventh in the NESCAC in three-point FG% (.429), eighth in blocked shots (1.18 bpg), 11th in free throw percentage (.772) and 22nd in scoring (12.4 ppg) as Amherst tallied 24 wins and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since 1994.

He enters his senior season 22nd on Amherst’s all-time scoring list with 929 career points.

Ranked 11th in the preseason, Amherst opens on Friday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. against visiting Medgar Evers College in the first round of the Ken Wright ’52 Memorial Invitational.
