Schiel Pours in 27, Leads Fifth-Ranked Jeffs Past Salve Regina, 87-56

January 25, 2005

AMHERST, MA - Senior co-captain Andrew Schiel (Wayne, PA) poured in 27 points on 10-for-12 shooting to lead the fifth-ranked Amherst College men’s basketball team past visiting non-conference foe Salve Regina University 87-56 on Tuesday night. Amherst improved to 14-1 with the win, while Salve Regina fell to 9-7.

The visiting Seahawks raced out to an early 19-12 lead, capitalizing on poor Amherst shooting and a red-hot Matt Coute (Somerset, MA), who netted his first four shots for 11 points over the first eight minutes. A long three from senior Russell Lee (Lorton, VA) ended a four-minute scoring drought for the Jeffs, and back-to-back layups from junior John Bedford (Ridgewood, NJ) gave them their first lead of the game with 3:19 left in the half. Amherst cruised into the break with a 12-3 run, highlighted by a slick dish from Lee to Schiel for a layup at the buzzer, while the Jeffs held Salve Regina to just two field goals over the final eight minutes of the half.

Salve Regina stayed close early in the second frame, battling inside to get to the charity stripe and cashing in on seven straight free throw attempts over the first three minutes. However, a trio of three-point plays by Schiel and a long-range bomb from junior forward John Casnocha (San Francisco, CA) stretched the Jeffs’ advantage to 18 and they would never look back. Amherst reserve forwards Dan O’Shea (Lawrence, MA) and Kevin Hopkins (Greenfield Center, NY) dumped in a combined 15 points down the stretch, including a highlight-reel dunk by Hopkins, and the Jeffs held Salve Regina scoreless in the final three minutes solidifying the 31-point victory.

Bedford and Casnocha joined Schiel in double-figures with 10 points each, while Casnocha grabbed a game-high eight boards and Lee chipped in nine points and a game-high four steals. Coute paced Salve Regina with 26 points, and senior co-captain Chris Collier (Exeter, NH), the Seahawks leading scorer coming into the game, managed just seven points and seven rebounds.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. at NESCAC rival Bowdoin College.
