Jeffs End Season With 2-1 NCAA Regional Loss to Trinity

May 20, 2005

HARWICH, MA - The Amherst College baseball team was ousted from the NCAA Regionals with a 2-1 loss to NESCAC rival Trinity College (33-7) at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Massachusetts on Friday. The Jeffs concluded their season at 23-9-1, while Trinity improved to 2-0 in regional play and advances to face the winner of tonight’s matchup between Wheaton College and Worcester State College.

Trinity sophomore Tim Kiely (Swampscott, MA) bested the Jeffs for the second time in a week, improving to 6-0. He scattered nine hits, allowing just one run and recording eight strikeouts in nine innings of work. The Bantams took the lead in the second as first-year Matt Stafford (Plymouth, MA) slapped a leadoff double and later scored on a Rob O’Leary (Easton, MA) sacrifice fly. Trinity added the eventual game-winner in the fifth inning as O’Leary reached base and scored on Amherst errors.

Junior first baseman Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) pulled Amherst within one, plating classmate Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) with a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth, but the Jeffs would get no closer. Amherst sophomore Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) paced the offense with three singles, while Green and Levinson added a pair of hits apiece. Junior hurler Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) tossed a complete game with five strikeouts, but finished the year at 7-2 with the hard-luck loss.
