Jeffs to Host NESCAC Championship Tournament

May 11, 2005

AMHERST, MA - After sealing up its second NESCAC West Division title in the last two years with a doubleheader sweep of Hamilton College on Sunday, Amherst College will host the NESCAC Baseball Championship Tournament this weekend. The double elimination tournament will open Friday at 3 p.m. as the Jeffs host Tufts University (23-9/10-2 NESCAC East), and NESCAC East Division champion Trinity College (28-5/10-2) faces Wesleyan University (11-22-1/7-4-1 NESCAC West) at 3:30 p.m. at nearby Western New England College (WNEC).

The winners of Friday’s matchups will meet Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at Amherst (Game 4), while the losers will travel to WNEC for a 10:30 a.m. tilt (Game 3). The survivor of Game 3 will return to Amherst at 2:30 p.m. to face the loser of Game 4 with a berth in NESCAC Championship game at stake. The finals will commence Sunday at 10 a.m. and the tournament winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. A second game on Sunday may be necessary if the team that enters the championship undefeated should lose the first game.

Amherst won the NESCAC West Division title and hosted the tournament in 2003, advancing through the winners’ bracket to the championship game, where they dropped a doubleheader to Trinity.
