Jeffs Split at Williams, Remain Atop NESCAC West

May 1, 2005

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Amherst College baseball team saw its 10-game winning streak fall by the wayside but remained in first place in the NESCAC West Division standings with a doubleheader split at archrival Williams College on Sunday. The Jeffs (17-4/6-1 NESCAC West) dropped the opener 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion, but rebounded to pummel the Ephs (16-15/7-5 NESCAC West) 17-5 in the nightcap.

In Game 1, a seven-inning affair, Amherst junior hurler Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) was downright dominant, setting the Ephs down in order in each of the first four innings and taking a one-hitter (and a 1-0 Amherst lead) into the bottom of the seventh. The story should’ve ended there, but with runners on first and second and one out, the Jeffs booted a tailor-made double play ball, which brought home the tying run and left the door open for a pinch-hit game-winning RBI single by Williams’ Matt Marino.

Vladeck’s hard-luck loss moved his record to 3-1, but his ERA stands at a stellar 1.19 as he’s surrendered just six earned runs in 45.1 innings. Amherst scored its only run in the fourth, courtesy of an RBI single by senior Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ).

Santry carried his hot bat into the second game as well, sparking Amherst’s 19-hit attack with a double, two singles, a stolen base, five RBIs and a run scored. The streaking Santry is hitting .667 over his last four games, upping his season average to .371, which is a good sign for the Jeffs. Junior Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) joined the fray with a pair of doubles, two singles three RBIs and four runs scored, raising his team-leading average to .405, while senior Dave Powers (Andover, MA) added his fifth home run of the season (all five of Powers’ round-trippers have come in the last five games, and he’s homered in four of the Jeffs’ last five games overall). Rounding out the box score, junior Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) singled and scored twice, sophomore Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) singled twice and knocked in a pair, junior Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) singled and doubled off the bench and rookie Matt Over (Fox River Grove, IL) doubled, singled, plated a trio of runs and scored another.

Amherst sophomore Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) drew the start and remained undefeated at 3-0 with 6.0 strong innings. Rookie Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY) added two frames of scoreless relief. The game was called due to darkness after Levinson drew a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at non-league foe Springfield College.
