Jeffs Pound Out 24 Hits, 17 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep Over Bates

April 17, 2005

AMHERST, MA - Junior shortstop Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) nailed his third home run of the season in the opener and senior third baseman Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ) drilled a solo blast in the nightcap as the Amherst College baseball team upped its record to 12-3 with a non-league doubleheader sweep over visiting Bates College (2-10) on Sunday. Game scores were 7-3 and 10-3.

Sophomore Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) went the distance in Game 1, striking out seven while allowing just six hits and two earned runs in seven complete innings. He moves to 2-0 with the victory. Junior first baseman Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) paced the offense with a double, two singles, an RBI and two runs scored, drilling a trio of first-pitch fastballs in consecutive at-bats. Sophomores Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ), Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) and senior Dave Powers (Andover, MA) each added multi-hit games. Schonberger’s round-tripper was the 11th of his career. Sophomore Griffin Finan (Bethesda, MD) tossed a complete game for Bates but took the loss to fall to 0-4.

Amherst benefited from a similarly strong pitching performance from rookie Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY) in Game 2. Edgar (4-1) pitched eight strong innings of six-hit baseball, striking out six and scattering a pair of earned runs before giving way to junior reliever Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) in the ninth. Santry stole the show on offense, singling home a run in the first and third innings and nailing his fourth career homer in the fifth. Scott added a double and a single in the win. Bates sophomore starter Dan Bousquet (Brooklyn, NY) surrendered seven hits and six earned runs in five innings and dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Amherst has now won six straight and nine of its last 10 and stands a perfect 7-0 at home. The Jeffs return to action Tuesday at 3 p.m. with a non-league tilt against visiting fourth-ranked Trinity College.
