Edgar, Kehoe Pitch Jeffs Past Middlebury

April 8, 2005

AMHERST, MA - Rookie starter Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY) pitched six strong innings, and sophomore Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) added three innings of scoreless relief to lead the Amherst College baseball team to a 7-4 victory in the first of a three-game set against visiting NESCAC West Division rival Middlebury College on Friday.

Edgar fanned six and improved to 3-1 with the win, while Kehoe added a trio of strikeouts and picked up his first save of the year.

Trailing 3-2 early on, Amherst broke the game open with a five-run flurry in the bottom of the fifth, keyed by a two-run single by sophomore right fielder Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) and a two-run double into the right-center-field gap by sophomore DH Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ). Scott then scored on a fielder’s choice to cement the rally.

After Edgar gave up a run in the sixth, Kehoe came on in the top of the seventh and shut the door the rest of the way.

Junior first baseman Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) had a big day for the Jeffs, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Senior co-captain Dave Powers (Andover, MA) doubled, singled and drove in a run, while Banner singled twice, stole a base, scored a run and plated a pair.

Senior Chris Fraser (Brooklyn, NY) drew the start and took the loss for Middlebury, surrendering seven earned runs on nine Amherst hits in 4.1 innings. Rookie Jack Britton (Carmel, CA) added 3.2 innings of one-hit relief. Junior shortstop Noah Walker (Oakland, CA) paced the Panthers offensively with a double, two singles, a run scored and two RBIs.

Amherst (7-3/1-0 NESCAC) and Middlebury (7-5/2-2 NESCAC) will resume their three-game set tomorrow (Saturday) with a NESCAC West Division doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
