Third-Ranked Jeffs Drop Bowdoin, 14-6

FROM A BOWDOIN COLLEGE RELEASE

April 10, 2004

BRUNSWICK, ME - The third-ranked Amherst College women’s lacrosse team overpowered NESCAC host Bowdoin College 14-6 on Saturday. Junior Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) led the Jeffs with six goals and two assists, and senior tri-captain Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) found the net five times as they improved to 8-1 (5-1 NESCAC) with the win.

Amherst started slow, falling behind 1-0 early, and not scoring in the first 12 minutes, but the Jeffs closed the half with an 8-1 outburst, including a buzzer-beating score by Aldrich with just one second left. With the game out of reach after the break, Bowdoin managed to score four second-half goals, but Amherst was relentless, tacking on six more scores. Also finding the net for the Amherst were seniors Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD) and Jackie Sargent (Concord MA) and sophomore Margaret Chute (Pawtucket, RI). Martin dished out two assists as well, while junior Cate Smith (Saint James, MD) dealt her 10th of the year and first-year Liz Wise (Scarsdale, NY) had her first collegiate assist.

Six different players scored for the Polar Bears, who fell to 7-3 (3-2 NESCAC) with the loss, including their leading scorer, senior Hilary Abrams. Junior Kendall Cox had 12 stops in goal for Bowdoin, while Amherst junior Olivia D’Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) collected 14.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting non-conference foe Springfield College.
