Second-Ranked Jeffs Rout Wheaton, 20-10

March 23, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The second-ranked defending national champion Amherst College women's lacrosse team won its home opener, 20-10, over visiting non-conference foe Wheaton College on Tuesday. Amherst junior Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) netted six goals and dished out four assists, and senior tri-captain Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD) scored six goals as well in the rout. Junior Olivia D’Ambrosio (Farmington, MA) was outstanding in goal collecting 13 saves as the Jeffs improved to 3-0.

Amherst took control early, building a 3-0 lead in the first four minutes. Wheaton finally answered as junior Vanessa Pisano (Vineyard, Haven, MA) netted an unassisted goal at the 6:27-mark, but Harmeling came right back as senior tri-captain Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) took control of the ensuing draw and took it the length of the field before finding her in front of the net for her second score. The Lyons rallied with three straight goals, the third a free-position score from senior Peri West (Weston, MA), to even the score at 4-4. However, the Jeffs exploded for eight straight goals, including four free-position tallies, to take a 12-4 advantage into the half.

Wheaton tried to mount a comeback, netting a pair of goals in the opening minutes of the second session, but could get no closer than seven as Amherst held its lead throughout. Martin led the way after the break, scoring the Jeffs’ first two goals of the half, and netting back-to-back scores down the stretch to secure the win. First-year Marjorie Yano (Columbus, OH) capped the Jeffs’ scoring at the 27:41-mark with her first career score.

Defensively, Amherst senior Christine Ryan (Summit, NJ) forced five Wheaton turnovers and picked up five ground balls, while Harmeling caused four turnovers and nabbed four ground balls, and D’Ambrosio collected five ground balls.

Pisano had 4 goals and an assist for the visitors, and senior Lauren Maynes (Woodstock, VT) netted a trio of goals as Wheaton suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 2-1. Junior A.J. Vasiliou (Middletown, CT) had 12 saves in goal.

Amherst returns to action in its NESCAC opener on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Colby College.
