Second-Ranked Jeffs Upend No. 8 Mary Washington, 13-8

FROM A MARY WASHINGTON COLLEGE RELEASE

March 18, 2004

FREDRICKSBURG, VA - The second-ranked defending national champion Amherst College women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 on Thursday with a 13-8 victory at No. 8 Mary Washington College (MWC). Amherst junior Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) posted her second consecutive four-goal outing, and senior tri-captain Jackie Sargent (Concord, MA) netted four goals as well, while dishing out three assists.

Amherst struck first as Sargent took a feed from junior Cate Smith (Saint James, MD) and found the net just over a minute into the game. However, the hosts answered quickly as senior Jessica Goon scored just 37 seconds later. Harmeling rallied for two of Amherst’s next four goals, assisting on another to Smith, and the Jeffs’ stingy defense relinquished just a pair of goals to MWC junior Britt Gottlieb to take a 6-3 lead at the half.

Harmeling, Sargent and senior tri-captain Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD) each posted a pair of second-half goals to lead the Jeffs after the break. Amherst senior tri-captain Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, CT) netted a second-half score as well, giving her two for the day. Martin and Harmeling each had two assists, while Aldrich and Smith dealt one apiece and first-year Dana Kuper (Denver, CO) dished out her first career assist.

Amherst junior goalie Olivia D'Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) collected eight saves, while MWC sophomore Robyn Lankford nabbed 11 saves as the Eagles fell to 3-2.

Amherst returns to action in its home opener on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against Wheaton College.
