Second-Ranked Jeffs Down No. 17 Drew 12-6 in Season Opener

FROM A DREW UNIVERSITY RELEASE

March 13, 2004

MADISON, NJ - The second-ranked defending national champion Amherst College women's lacrosse team opened its season with a convincing 12-6 victory at No. 17 Drew University on Saturday night. Senior tri-captain Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD) and junior Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) netted four goals apiece to pace the Jeffs, while junior netminder Olivia D'Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) tallied 16 saves in her first career start.

Amherst raced to an early 3-0 lead, but the hosts battled back to pull within one on goals from junior Ann Luetzow and senior Kara Fetter. Martin led another run as the Jeffs outscored Drew 4-1 over the final 11 minutes of the opening half and carried a 7-3 advantage into halftime.

Both squads came out of the break firing as five goals were scored in the first two minutes of play. Fetter tried to mount a Ranger rally with a goal immediately out of the half, but Harmeling responded with a pair of scores to push Amherst’s lead to five, 9-4. Fetter found the back of the net again off an assist from junior Whitney McMullen at the 18:42-mark, but Amherst senior tri-captain Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) answered just 40 seconds later with a score of her own.

Aldrich finished with a pair of goals, while junior Cate Smith (Saint James, MD) tallied a goal and two assists and sophomore Scotty Hanley (Sparks, MD) notched a goal. Martin and Harmeling each dished out an assist as well.

Despite being outshot 27-18, Amherst dealt Drew (2-1) its first loss of the season. Ranger sophomore goalie Casey O’Brien grabbed eight saves in the loss.

Amherst returns to action Thursday at 4 p.m. at ninth-ranked non-conference foe Mary Washington College.
