Jeffs Post 5-3 Win Over Conn. College in Regular Season Finale

February 17, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women’s hockey team posted a 5-3 victory over visiting NESCAC rival Connecticut College in its regular season finale on Tuesday night. Amherst sophomore Renee Sisti (Coventry, CT) tallied a pair of third-period goals, while first-year defender Kirsten Forsberg (Kenilworth, IL) had a goal and an assist and senior Ali White (Brookline, MA) dished out two assists as the Jeffs finish the regular season with the best record in school history at 13-11 (7-9 NESCAC).

Conn. opened the scoring at the 12:08-mark of the first period as junior Ali Elkins (Bernardsville, NJ) found sophomore Katie Roth (Deerfield, MA) for the 1-0 lead. However, Forsberg took a slick feed across the crease from White and flipped the puck into the open net to knot the score, 1-1, just three minutes later. Forsberg then found first-year Emily Cronin (Arlington, MA) from behind the net to give the Jeffs a 2-1 advantage at the end of the opening frame.

Amherst first-year Rachel Simon (West Orange, NJ) pushed the lead to 3-1 in the opening minutes of the second session as she curled from behind her own net and tucked a backhand inside the near post. The Camels responded at the 13:48-mark as sophomore Laura Gosnell (East Windsor, NJ) capitalized on a turnover and took the puck from mid-ice and beat the Amherst goalie to cut the lead to one, 3-2.

Sisti stepped up in the final period as she regained the Jeffs’ two-goal edge with a nifty wrap-around score at the 9:24-mark, and later pushed the lead to 5-2 as she found an open Conn. net off an assist from first-year Alena Harrison (Westwood, MA). The Camels capped the scoring in the final seconds as sophomore Kate Reardon (Newton, MA) scored off a Britt Appleton (Winnetka, IL) assist.

Amherst first-year goalie Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) collected 16 saves as the Jeffs secured their highest-ever seeding in the NESCAC Tournament with the win, while Camel sophomore Gabby Petrill (Greensburg, PA) posted 30 saves as Conn. drops to 7-15 (5-9 NESCAC).

Amherst’s seeding in the tournament, which begins first-round action Saturday, February 28, is dependent on the finish of NESCAC play this Friday and Saturday. The Jeffs are currently alone in fourth place behind Middlebury, Bowdoin and Williams College. Trailing Amherst is Wesleyan (9-13/6-8) in fifth, and Conn. and Hamilton (7-12-1/5-9) in a tie for sixth. Amherst is guaranteed the No. 4 seed, and a first-round home matchup, if Wesleyan drops its final two regular season games against Colby and Middlebury and Conn. and Hamilton split in their double-header this weekend. Otherwise, the Jeffs face a bevy of tie-breaking situations and will earn either the No. 5 or 6 seed.
