Jeffs Bow to Muhlenberg at Land of Magic Classic, 88-71

December 29, 2003

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Amherst College women’s basketball team saw a seven-point first-half lead fall by the wayside in a hard-fought 88-71 loss to undefeated Muhlenberg College (6-0) in the first round of the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida on Monday. Amherst (6-2) placed three players in double figures, led by senior guard Shannon Russell’s (Shrewsbury, MA) game- and season-high 18 points.

Muhlenberg - which runs a full-court pressure, up-tempo attack, subbing five players at a time at nearly every whistle - trailed for most of the opening period and faced a 27-20 deficit after an Amherst bucket with 8:50 left in the first half. The Mules then battled back with a 26-9 flurry to take a 10-point halftime lead they would never relinquish.

Muhlenberg senior Erin DeVaney scored seven of her career-high 13 points in the decisive first-half run, while Susan Marchiano added 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Amherst sophomore Ali Flato (Piedmont, CA) and senior LaShauna Barboza (New Bedford, MA) joined Russell in double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively, while senior Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) chipped in with six points, 12 boards, - which tied a career high - four assists and three blocks.

Each of Muhlenberg’s 18 players saw at least four minutes of action, while 11 Mules played 11 minutes or more. The Jeffs committed 37 turnovers to Muhlenberg’s 32.

Amherst returns to action at the Land of Magic Classic Tuesday at 10 a.m. against Widener University.
