Jeffs Defeat Smith, 71-49

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women’s basketball team improved to 6-1 defeating non-conference foe Smith College 71-49 on Wednesday night. Senior quad-captains Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) and Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) led the Jeffs with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The Jeffs carried a three-point advantage into the break, but came out firing as they reeled off 16 straight points and built their lead to 46-27 in the first five minutes of the second half. Russell netted four three-pointers in the game, while McGuire added eight boards, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Also chipping in for Amherst was sophomore Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) with 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophmore guard Ali Flato (Piedmont, CA) had a strong game as she dished out a career-high nine assists and nabbed a career-high four steals, while sophomore guard Kristine Morin (Litchfield, NH) led the defense with a career-high five steals.

Smith first-year Hilary Hightower (Stone Mountain, GA) drained four threes, and fellow rookie Helena Charron (Portland, ME) netted seven free throws as the two contributed matching 12-point efforts. Sophomore forward Shelley Harrison (Reston, VA) posted 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals for the Pioneers, who fall to 3-4 with the loss.

Amherst returns to action Monday December 29 at 10 a.m. at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona, FL against Muhlenberg College.
