Jeffs Pummel WNEC in Final Round of Pioneer Valley Women's Hoop Classic

December 6, 2003

AMHERST, MA - After edging Springfield College 60-59 on Friday night, Amherst College steamrolled visiting Western New England College (WNEC) 84-59 on Saturday in the final round of the Third-Annual Pioneer Valley Women’s Basketball Classic. In other tournament action (also at Amherst), Springfield edged Westfield State College 51-50 on a last-second shot by senior guard Kelly McOmber (Woodbury, CT).

Amherst (5-1) drained its first four shots, including three-pointers by senior guards Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA), Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) and LaShauna Barboza (New Bedford, MA), and jumped out to a 20-2 lead in its lopsided win over WNEC (1-4). The Jeffs placed 11 players in the scoring column, led by junior sharpshooter Kate Herlihy (Glens Falls, NY), who erupted with a game- and career-high 16 points off the bench. Barboza chipped in with 13 points on 4-for-5 shooting, while sophomore forward Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) added 11 points and sophomore guard Ali Flato (Piedmont, CA) tallied 10 points and six assists. McGuire had a particularly strong game with nine points on 3-for-3 shooting to go along with a game- and career-high seven assists. Sophomore center Julie Smith (Villanova, PA) paced the defense with a game- and career-high five blocks.

Sophomore center Lisa Masella (Newtown, CT) paced WNEC with 12 points. Senior guard Emily Sward (Plainville, CT) and rookie center Vicky Taylor (Feeding Hills, MA) added 11 points each.

Springfield (3-3) trailed by four in the waning seconds against previously undefeated Westfield State (4-1), but sophomore forward Courtney Parvin (Brackney, PA) canned her only three-pointer of the game to cut the lead to one with just 1.5 seconds remaining. Springfield quickly called timeout and forced Westfield State into a five-second violation on the ensuing inbounds play. McOmber then canned the game winner from the left baseline off a pass from sophomore guard Caitlyn Cuthbertson (Assonet, MA), giving the Pride the victory on their first and only lead of the game.

Sophomore forward Katie Trice (Concord, NH) led Springfield with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Parvin and sophomore center Erin Schwartz (Milford, CT) added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Westfield State placed three players in double figures as well. Sophomore guard Meghan McCarthy (Belchertown, MA) led the way with 14 points. Sophomore forward Lekeisha Walker (Springfield, MA) added 12 points and 13 boards in the loss.
