Jeffs Edge Springfield 60-59 in First Round of Pioneer Valley Women's Basketball Classic

AMHERST, MA - Senior guard Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) drained a jumper from just inside the three-point line with six seconds left in regulation to give Amherst College a dramatic 60-59 win over visiting Springfield College in the first round of the Third-Annual Pioneer Valley Women’s Basketball Classic on Friday. In other first-round action, Westfield State College improved to 4-0 with a convincing 57-35 win over Western New England College, which fell to 1-3 with the loss.

Springfield took a 59-58 lead on a layup by sophomore guard Caitlyn Cuthbertson (Assonet, MA) off a steal and assist by senior guard Kelly McOmber (Woodbury, CT) inside the final minute. Cuthbertson was fouled on the play but couldn’t convert the free throw, leaving Amherst with a chance in the final minute. McGuire nearly won the game when a three-pointer rattled out with 17 seconds on the clock. Sophomore teammate Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) then saved the day with an offensive rebound, giving the Jeffs an opportunity set up a play during a Springfield timeout. When play resumed, Amherst senior guard LaShauna Barboza (New Bedford, MA) inbounded the ball to classmate Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA), who swung the ball to McGuire for the game-winner. Springfield had a chance to win the game with one second left, but McOmber hit the front of the with a three-point territory, sealing the win for the Jeffs.

Amherst placed four players in double figures. Russell led the way with 15 points, while McGuire finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Sophomore Kristine Morin (Litchfield, NH) added a career-high 11 points on the strength of 5-for-5 shooting from the charity stripe, and Latham chipped in with 10 points and 10 boards.

McOmber and Cuthbertson paced Springfield with 13 and 11 points respectively. Amherst improved to 4-1 with the win. Springfield fell to 2-3.

In Friday night’s other first-round game, Westfield St. sophomore forward Lekeisha Walker (Springfield, MA) nearly posted her first career triple double with 14 points, 15 rebounds, eight blocks and five steals. Fellow sophomore forward Amanda Chapin (Westfield, MA) added a double-double of her own with 10 points and 17 rebounds. Western New England sophomore center Lisa Masella (Newtown, CT) finished with 14 points and seven boards in the loss.

Tournament play resumes Saturday at noon with Springfield facing Westfield St. Amherst will host Western New England in the second game of the doubleheader, set for 2 p.m.
