McGuire Earns Tournament MVP, Leads Jeffs to Vassar Invitational Championship with 59-40 Win Over Host Brewers

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Senior quad-captain Marissa McGuire’s 12 points, 12 rebounds and six assists led the Amherst women’s basketball team to a 59-40 win over Vassar College in the championship game of the Vassar Invitational on Saturday. McGuire was named tourney MVP, while sophomore guard Ali Flato earned All-Tournament honors as Amherst improved to 2-0.

The Jeffs built a 14-point halftime lead behind senior quad-captain Shannon Russell, who led a 15-2 scoring run with six of her team-best 14 points midway through the first half. Russell also added a team-high three steals, while first-year forward Caroline Polales had 10 points and six boards, and Flato chipped in with four points and 11 rebounds. Amherst’s defense was outstanding, holding the Brewers to 27.1% (16-59) shooting from the floor, 23.3% (7-30) in the second half.

All-Tournament forward Natalie Serkowski led Vassar with 15 points and eight rebounds, as the Brewers fell to 1-1.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. at non-conference opponent Mt. Holyoke College.
