Jeffs Fall to Westfield State, 65-52

January 27, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's basketball team fell to visiting non-conference foe Westfield State College on Tuesday night, 65-52. Westfield St. senior Meredith Maaske (Coon Rapids, MN) posted a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Owls improved to 12-4. Amherst senior quad-captain Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) had a team-high 13 points, five rebounds and three steals as the Jeffs fell to 9-9.

Amherst held the Owls to just 27.0% (10-for-37) shooting from the field in the first half, but Westfield St. collected 12 offensive rebounds and netted 83.3% (10-of-12) of its free throws to carry a 33-25 advantage into the break. Maaske paced the visitors with 16 points and five rebounds, while Amherst sophomore Julie Smith (Villanova, PA) kept the Jeffs in the game with six points and six rebounds in the half.

Russell came out firing after the break, nailing four of her first six shots to pull the Jeffs within two, 40-38, at the 10:49-mark. However, the Owls calmed down and pushed the lead back to eight, 49-41. The Jeffs fought back again, cutting the lead to three points after a pair of free throws from senior quad-captain LaShauna Barboza (New Bedford, MA), but they would get no closer as Maaske netted nine free throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. at NESCAC rival Tufts University.
