Jeffs Fall at Williams, 71-60

January 24, 2004

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Amherst College women's basketball team fell at NESCAC and Little Three Rival Williams College on Saturday, 71-60. Williams sophomore Colleen Hession netted a game-high 24 points as the Ephs improved to 14-2 (4-0 NESCAC). The Jeffs placed four players in double figures, seniors Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) and Caitlin Farrell (Lafayette, CA), and sophomores Kristine Morin (Litchfield, NH) and Julie Smith (Villanova, PA), as they dropped to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

The Ephs pushed out to a 14-6 lead over the first six minutes behind five early points from first-year forward Meghan O’Malley, but the Jeffs settled down and kept Williams within six points up to the 6:56-mark. Hession and first-year Margaret Miller proceeded to lead an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to give the Ephs a commanding 35-20 lead. Hession netted 13 first-half points, including three buckets from behind the arc, leading Williams to its 42-25 advantage at the break.

The Ephs would lead by as many as 20 in the opening minutes of the second half, but with 13:24-left the Jeffs went on an 18-5 run to cut the lead to 58-51 with 3:38 remaining. Russell led the comeback with eight of her 10 points during the stretch. Unfortunately, the Jeffs ran out of gas, and the Ephs held them off in the final minutes en route to their eighth-consecutive victory.

Senior Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) pulled down eight boards for Amherst, while Smith and fellow sophomore Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) collected five each.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. against visiting non-conference foe Westfield State College.
