Jeffs Earn First NESCAC Win With 77-64 Victory Over Middlebury

January 23, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's basketball team earned its first NESCAC victory this season with a 77-64 win over visiting Middlebury College on Friday night. Senior quad-captain Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) led the Jeffs with 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals, while classmates Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) and LaShauna Barboza (New Bedford, MA) added 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Amherst’s defense was outstanding in the first half, holding Middlebury to just 10 field goals and an 0-for-9 shooting performance behind the arc, while forcing 13 turnovers en route to a 32-24 lead at the break. The Jeffs caught fire in the second half, draining 8-of-12 from behind the arc and built their lead as high as 18 points. The Panthers cut the lead to nine after consecutive buckets from junior Alexis Hollinger (New London, NH) with 12 minutes remaining, but McGuire and Barboza responded with 11-straight points to put Middlebury away for good.

Senior Alexis Batten (Avalon, NJ) led the Panthers with a double-double, 21 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Kate Fehsenfeld (Zionsville, IN) chipped in 15 points.

Amherst improved to 9-7 (1-2 NESCAC) with the win, while the Panthers dropped their fifth-straight and fell to 7-6 (0-2 NESCAC).
