Jeffs Fall Just Short in 53-51 Loss at 22nd-Ranked Wesleyan

FROM A WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY RELEASE

January 20, 2004

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Amherst College women's basketball team rallied back from an 18-point second-half deficit to cut the lead to just two points inside the final minute, but fell just short in Tuesday night's 53-51 non-league loss at Little Three rival Wesleyan University. Senior guard LaShauna Barboza (New Bedford, MA) paced the Jeffs with 13 points in defeat.

Amherst trailed 35-22 at the break, but rallied to outscore the Cardinals 29-18 in the second half, holding them to just 25.0% (8-for-32) shooting from the floor. Barboza and fellow senior Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) combined for a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 12 at the 7:30-mark, and the Jeffs continued to chip away at the lead, cutting it to 53-49 with 1:45 remaining. Amherst senior Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) scored two of her seven points on a running layup with 1:00 left, but after three consecutive Wesleyan misses at the free throw line the Jeffs could not connect with either of their two game-tying attempts.

Sophomore Ashley Mastrangelo led the way for the Cardinals with 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting as they improved to 12-1 with the win.

Amherst (8-7) returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Middlebury College.
