Jeffs Drop 61-56 Loss to Williams

January 10, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women’s basketball team fell to visiting NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams College 61-56 on Saturday night. Williams first-year Margaret Miller (Wellesley, MA) led all scorers with 28 points as the Ephs improved to 9-1 with the win. Senior quad-captain Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) led the Jeffs with 15 points as Amherst dropped to 7-4.

After trailing 28-17 at the break, Amherst fought back in the second half to get within striking distance. Russell netted a three-pointer at the 11:23-mark to cut the Williams lead to 44-38, and first-year guard Kim Glazier (Boxford, MA) followed with two free throws to make it 44-40. However, the Ephs pulled away again, going on a 9-5 run over the next five minutes to make the score 53-45. The Jeffs answered with a 11-4 run of their own, which senior quad-captain Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) capped with a 15-foot jumper to cut the lead to 57-56 with just 1:18 remaining. Williams junior Kerri McMahon (Denville, NJ) answered with a fadeaway jumper to push Williams’ lead back to three with 48 seconds left and the Ephs wouldn’t look back.

Despite missing the front ends of two 1-and-1 opportunities at the free throw line, Williams denied the Jeffs any good looks from the three-point line and sophomore guard Colleen Hession (Northampton, MA) netted two free throws with 6.7 seconds left to seal the win.

McGuire posted nine points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for Amherst, while Glazier chipped in a career-high 10 points and six assists. For Williams, Miller grabbed eight boards to go with her 28 points, and McMahon contributed eight points, six rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. with a non-conference match-up against visiting WPI.
