January 8, 2004

BOSTON, MA - Senior quad-captain Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) netted six threes en route to a season-best 22 points, as the Amherst College women’s basketball team downed non-conference host Simmons College 76-63 on Wednesday night. Amherst sophomore Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds and senior quad-captain Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) added 12 points and nine boards as the Jeffs improved to 7-3 with the win.

Amherst managed to take a 33-28 lead into halftime, despite shooting only 36.1% (13-for-36) from the floor. However, the Jeffs returned in the second half to secure the victory by increasing their accuracy to an impressive 54.3% (19-for-35) from the field. Senior quad-captain LaShauna Barboza (New Bedford, MA) contributed nine points, six assists and four rebounds, while first-year guard Kim Glazier (Boxford, MA) dished out a game- and career-high nine assists. The Jeff defense was outstanding as it held Simmons (6-3) to a mere 29.2% (19-for-65) from the floor.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 6 p.m. with a non-conference tilt against visiting NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams College.
