Warner Tosses Gem but Amherst Softball Falls at Streaking WNEC, 1-0

April 27, 2004

SPRINGFIELD, MA - Despite a complete-game five-hit pitching performance by sophomore fireballer Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA), the Amherst softball team dropped a 1-0 decision at red-hot non-league foe Western New England College (WNEC) on Tuesday. The Jeffs fell victim to an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning, evening their record at 13-13, while WNEC improved to 33-9, shattering a school record with its 28th consecutive victory.

WNEC starter Holly Coutinho (New Bedford, MA) scattered two hits and struck out four en route to her first shutout of the season. Junior Tricia Troiano (Stewart Manor, NY) plated the game-winning run with an RBI single in the fifth, following a leadoff walk and an Amherst error.

Warner and sophomore Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA) each singled for the Jeffs. Warner dropped to 10-7 with the pitching loss despite tossing her 37th career complete game.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at non-league foe Springfield College.
