Warner Fans 15 as Jeffs Down Brandeis, 6-1

FROM A BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY RELEASE

April 16, 2004

WALTHAM, MA - Sophomore hurler Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) struck out a career-high 15 batters as the Amherst College Softball team downed non-conference host Brandeis University 6-1 on Friday. Warner fanned the side in the first three innings, stranding three Brandeis runners in the third as Amherst improved to 11-10, while Brandeis fell to 8-15.

The Jeffs got all the scoring they would need in the top of the third inning. With one out, sophomore first baseman Laura Trigeiro (Reston, VA) tripled in the game's first run, and first-year shortstop Annalise Rodli (La Canada, CA) followed, drawing a walk and swiping second base. Amherst senior second baseman Gina Scribner (Star, ID) plated both runners with one of her two hits on the day, the other being an RBI double in the seventh inning. Brandeis picked up its lone run in the bottom half of the third as senior centerfielder Sara Albert, who went 2-for-2, drew a bases-loaded walk.

Trigeiro finished 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI, and first-year Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple as well. Warner improved to 9-5 on the year, scattering six hits and surrendering just one run, while Brandeis sophomore pitcher Brianne Smith fell to 8-10, giving up three earned runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out four.

Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. for a NESCAC West doubleheader at Hamilton College.
