Jeffs Drop Doubleheader to Bowdoin

April 10, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College softball team suffered a pair of losses to visiting Bowdoin College in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, 3-0 and 4-2. Bowdoin senior Erin Hanley (Foxboro, MA) tossed a complete game two-hitter in the opener to improve to 4-4 on the year, and in Game 2, sophomore Sarah Thomas (Dallas, TX) had a two-run single in the top of the eighth to give the Polar Bears the win as they improved to 13-6 overall. Amherst sophomore Laura Trigeiro (Reston, VA) posted a combined four hits and an RBI as the Jeffs fell to 10-10.

Bowdoin used a three-run third inning to pick up the win in Game 1. After putting runners on first and second with a walk and a single, sophomore Megan Wyman (Sleep Falls, ME) lined a single up the middle, plating junior Caroline Quinn (Rumson, NJ). The Polar Bears picked up two more runs on throwing errors to post a 3-0 lead.

The Jeffs threatened in the fifth as sophomore pitcher Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) tried to help her own cause by drawing a two-out walk, and senior Jess Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH) reached and advanced to second on a Bowdoin error. However, Hanley worked her way out of the jam, forcing a groundout, and stranding Warner and Allen on base. Warner threw all seven innings and fell to 8-5 with the loss. She surrendered just one earned run on five hits and two walks, while striking out four.

In Game 2, Bowdoin jumped on top early as sophomore shortstop Danielle Chagnon (Windsor Locks, CT) reached on an error in the top of the first and Wyman followed with an RBI single to right field. Amherst tried to respond in the bottom half, loading the bases on a pair of singles and an error, but first-year pitcher Caitlin Polistena (Mattituck, NY) forced an infield pop-up and a groundout to get out of the inning. Amherst knotted the score in the following inning on an RBI double by Trigeiro, who went 3-for-4 in the nightcap, and took the lead in the third as first-year Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) scampered home on a passed ball.

Amherst took its 2-1 lead into the seventh frame, but Bowdoin tied the game on a RBI double from Wyman, forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth and final frame, with the leadoff runner placed on second base at the start of the inning (in accordance with the NCAA tiebreak rule), senior Britney Carr (Conway, NH) tried to bunt sophomore Megan Rodgers (St. Louis, MO) to third, but Trigeiro made great play, catching the bunt in the air and holding Rodgers at second. However, Rodgers later advanced to third on an Amherst throwing error, and senior Gillian Stevens (New York, NY) swiped second to give Bowdoin runners on second and third with one out. Thomas followed with the game-winning hit, and the Jeffs couldn’t respond in the bottom half of the inning.

Polistena threw three innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, and first-year Emily Nelson (Pasadena CA) picked up the win in relief, improving to 6-1, tossing five scoreless innings and surrendering just one hit. Amherst first-year Hilary Little (Kentfield, CA) went the distance, scattering seven hits and giving up just one earned run as she fell to 2-5.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference twinbill at Westfield State College.
